NRCA Joins Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention, Encourages Roofing Industry to Observe National Suicide Prevention Week

suicide-logos5-finalAccording to a July 2016 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the construction industry is one of the most at-risk industries for suicide, ranking No. 1 in the number of suicides and No. 2 in suicide rate – nearly four times the national average among the general population.

A July 2017 article published in Professional Roofing magazine states roofing contractors, similar to construction contractors in general, have a large portion of their workforce composed of males between the ages of 25 and 45, which are the most at-risk demographic for suicide death, according to the CDC.

Sept. 10-16 is National Suicide Prevention Week, which is meant to promote awareness of mental health and suicide typically a taboo topic. The Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention offers resources on its website, including published articles, FAQs, posters to display in the workplace, and information and tips regarding how to plan an education session or suicide prevention summit, among other resources.

As part of its commitment to safety in the roofing industry, NRCA has joined the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention, a group of key industry organizations that are committed to promoting the safety and well-being of construction workers. Established by the Construction Financial Management Association in 2016, the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention’s mission is “to provide and disseminate information and resources for suicide prevention and mental health promotion in construction with the goal of creating a zero-suicide industry.”

During National Suicide Prevention Week, NRCA encourages the roofing industry to visit the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention, and to share its messages aimed at building a zero-suicide industry at www.cfma.org/news/content.cfm?ItemNumber=4570&navItemNumber=4639

Kidd Roofing Helps Host a Hurricane Harvey Donation Drive with the University of Houston Football Team

Kidd Roofing Helps Host a Hurricane Harvey Donation Drive with the University of Houston Football Team

AUSTIN, Texas – Kidd Roofing of Austin, Texas, recently hosted a Hurricane Harvey donation drive on Thursday, Aug. 31 at their Austin office with the University of Houston football team and Head Coach, Major Applewhite. The football team had been relocated to Austin for several days due to the devastating floods in the Houston area caused by Hurricane Harvey. Several other colleges such as the University of Texas, SMU, Baylor, Texas Tech, Texas State and North Texas donated their football trailers for the donation drive to load up the donated supplies and send them to the Houston area. The convoy of semi’s left early Friday morning and delivered the much needed supplies.

“We were just glad to be able to help out in some way,” said Chris Lowe of Kidd Roofing. “Several of us have friends and family in the Houston area that were affected by the floods. When we were asked by the University of Houston to help host a donation drive and collect the much needed supplies with the football players and coaches, it was a no-brainer.  It was also really great to see so many of the other colleges donate their trailers to transport the donations down to Houston.”

According to Lowe, “Even if your company isn’t involved in repairing roofs in the affected areas, there are other ways to assist such as donating to the Red Cross or other relief funds. It’s going to take a lot of time and money to rebuild these affected areas.  Every little bit helps.”

Wade joined the company in 2009 as the director of marketing, moving up to its director of sales and marketing and then to vice president of strategy before being named the executive vice president. She brings more than 20 years of sales, marketing and business strategy experience to North American Roofing. Her other experience includes advertising and strategic account development in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Florida and North Carolina.

“Kelly is a born leader and has created a culture unique to roofing and in line with some of the most diverse and progressive companies in the U.S.,” said Brian Verble, the former CEO and current president and vice chair of the board who will transition to chairman of the board. “It’s a culture of inclusion, team idea development, accountability and work-life balance that comes naturally to her.”

During Wade’s tenure as chief operating officer, she created a standard process-oriented and data-driven culture across all departments by investing heavily in technology and training, according to the company. Wade also expanded service offerings nationally, established a solid leadership team, implemented customer-first programs, grew the large-scale national customer base and relocated the company headquarters from North Carolina to Tampa, Florida.

“Beyond surpassing the financial and strategic goals of the company, Kelly has proven to have the character and intrinsic qualities the Board wants in its leader,” said Mike Verble, the board chairman. “Most of all, Kelly is fully committed to making North American Roofing the greatest and most profitable company it can be.”

“I’m grateful for the 8-year journey I’ve had at North American Roofing and to the amazing group of people I’m so blessed to work with every day,” said Wade. “I’m committed to leading the team in executing the vision and goals of the board and to continue to build upon our rich 38-year history. The future is beyond exciting for North American Roofing.”

According to Fortune Magazine’s 2017 Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 lists, which ranks major U.S. companies by their fiscal 2016 revenues, a mere 32 of Fortune 500 companies were run by women and only 35 of Fortune 1000 companies had women at the helm. “I’m proud to be added to the number of women leading companies in the U.S., and in the construction industry especially,” said Wade. “I truly hope it inspires other women and young girls to be independent and confident because that would mean more to me. My parents taught me to work harder than the next person–regardless of gender.”
